Lucy was born around the year 283 in Sicily. Her father died shortly after she was born, so her mother raised her and taught her about the Christian faith. When an illness confined her to bed, Lucy cared for her and encouraged her to travel to the tomb of St. Agatha. Through that intercession, her mother received a cure!
Her mother wanted Lucy to marry a wealthy young man who was not a Christian. When she refused, he had her arrested and she eventually became a martyr. Reading this story can encourage us to follow in the footsteps of St. Lucy, who sought the intercession of the saints and remained true to her faith even in the face of death.
