John Barry was born in Ireland in 1745 and grew up in a loving Catholic family. When he was a teenager, his parents gave him permission to sail to America. He settled in Philadelphia and became a very successful captain of merchant ships. In 1775 he volunteered to serve in the Continental Navy during the American Revolution.
Captain Barry won many victories for his country, but he was also known for his kindness to all who served under him. Reading this story can encourage us to follow in the footsteps of John Barry, who was faithful to his duties and kind to those under his leadership.
