Includes song book, student workbook, teacher manual, and CD. Do you dream of your child reading Virgil or Cicero one day? Or St. Augustine and the Vulgate? Lingua Angelica is a unique program to help you reach that goal. Latin hymns are the best introduction to reading and translation because they have short, simple, and memorable sentences. And they contain some of the most beautiful and sublime thoughts ever written in any language.
Students can start Lingua Angelica at the same time they begin their study of Latin grammar, or even before! Preschool and early primary grades can memorize prayers and sing hymns as a great preparation for Latin. Lingua Angelica can be used with any Latin grammar program, but of course we recommend Latina Christiana and Henley.
How does Lingua Angelica work? Students listen to the CD, singing and reciting the hymns and prayers and gradually memorizing them through daily repetition. In the process they acquire new vocabulary and models of grammar/syntax in context. Then as students proceed through their Latin grammar, the memorized passages serve as a constant supply of examples to illustrate the new grammar lessons and vocabulary. Difficult concepts become clear as students analyze the passages they have already memorized.
The Lingua Angelica CD contains all of the music in LC I and 11 plus the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, Stabat Mater, Dies Irae, Ave Maria, Panis Angelicus, Ubi Caritas, Pange Lingua, Tantum Ergo, Ave Verum Corpus, and many more Latin hymns along with 4 prayers. Recorded in the Cathedral of the Assumption in Louisville by an acapella six voice Gregorian chant choir, this recording is very high quality. The words are clear, and the music is exquisite.
The student workbook provides facing vocabulary, space for interlinear translation, English word order translation, vocabulary drill, and parsing. The teacher manual/ key provides guidelines for how to use Lingua Angelica with your students, regardless of their age or the Latin program used. As Adrian Fortescue said "there is not and there is never likely to be any religious poetry in the world worthy to be compared with the hymns of the Latin office." What better way to inspire your children to love and learn Latin!
Lingua Angelica introduces your students to translation in a systematic and "do-able" method. Christian Latin should always be the first step in learning to translate Latin literature because it has shorter, simpler sentences, and clearer word structure than classical authors. Just like you wouldn't study Calculus before you learn Algebra, you shouldn't approach Caesar, Cicero, or Virgil before you conquer Christian Latin. As Cheryl Lowe put it "Christian Latin is infinitely easier to read than classical authors so why would you start anywhere else."
These hymns and prayers are so timeless and beautiful that all students begin by memorizing the Latin verses and English translations. Because these hymns are set to music, your students learn them faster and remember them longer than a traditional memory exercise. Lingua Angelica is designed for all ages so even preschoolers can learn to sing and memorize Latin hymns. Beginning Latin grammar students can also add hundreds of words to their vocabulary and use the workbook as a beginning translation text. More advanced students will study various examples of Latin syntax and grammar by translating the complete hymns.
By learning these hymns and prayers early, students will be introduced to grammar forms and syntax that will help them advance more quickly in their Latin studies. Later, when you introduce ideas like the passive voice or subjunctive, you will be able to point it out in several of the hymns they have already memorized and studied. Your students will realize understand these concepts faster and better as they realize they already know how to use them. By using these hymns as an introductory translation text, students in our school have made huge leaps forward in their Latin grammar studies and advanced through new material with less frustration and confusion.
Just imagine, in a few short months, your child will be reciting and singing some of the greatest works of Christian and Latin literature.
Note: This is not a replacement for a Latin grammar course. It is a wonderful translation course for all ages designed to be used along with any Latin grammar course. (of course, we recommend Latina Christiana for beginners or Henle Latin for more advanced students.) Also, by having your students memorize and sing the songs in Lingua Angelica they will have a great head start before the even begin a Latin grammar course.
